Battlefield 4 unlikely to arrive on the Wii U

Given everything that has happened between EA and Nintendo over the past year, Battlefield 4 is unlikely to see release on the Wii U.

There have been a lot of rumors about a possible Battlefield game on Nintendo’s Wii U console. When the console was first unveiled, with its touchpad controller, DICE went on record saying that they “definitely see potential” in the console. And according to various rumors, EA and DICE were in fact developing BF3 for the Wii U, but at some point last year, the project was scrapped in favor of Battlefield 4.

Battlefield 4 on Wii UEA is betting big on the next gen systems form Sony and Microsoft, and according to EA CEO John Riccitiello, that doesn’t include the Wii U. Riccitiello famously said earlier this year that he didn’t consider the Wii U a “next-gen” console.

Which begs the question: will we see Battlefield 4 on the Wii U? If Battlefield 4 is strictly a next-gen game, coming out on the PC, PS4 and Xbox 360, it’s highly doubtful we’ll see it on the Wii U. This is largely because of its hardware, which is only marginally better than current generation consoles.

However, if there is a PS3 and Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 4, there is a chance that Nintendo fans might get the game. After all, the Wii U is just as powerful, if not more, than the current generation systems. Knowing EA and their quest to sell as many games as possible, they could EA DICE BF4release it on current gen systems. Which would mean that Battlefield 4 would be released on no less than 6 major platforms (PC included). But things still aren’t as clear cut when it comes to Nintendo’s platform.

At E3 2011, during the very first Wii U unveiling, EA actually showcased BF3 running on the console. What happened to that “game”? Was it just a tech demo, or was it the scrapped BF3 Wii U title that never got released? EA and Nintendo haven’t been the best of friends lately. Which is another reason why Battlefield 4 might just skip the Wii U altogether.

Which is a shame, because the Wii U, with its innovative touchscreen controller, could pave way for some awesome new Battlefield 4 gameplay ideas. Features such as the “Commander” would be a no-brainer on the Wii U. The controller could be used for anything from squad and inventory management, map overviews, vehicle commands, etc.

Wii U Battlefield 4In the end, given everything that has happened so far — including a canceled BF3 game on the Wii U and the fact that the console isn’t nearly as powerful as other next-gen systems — we doubt Battlefield 4 will see a release on the Wii U. The console hasn’t been selling well either, and the majority of Wii U owners simply aren’t the first person shooter type. Activision was very upset at Black Ops 2 sales on the platform, something EA no doubt has been aware of.

lol Failtendo is fail. Nintendo will not have a hardcore gaming community. Ever. Not as long as they’re set on being the leader in the diminishing kids-first corner of the game industry. This isn’t the 90’s… A majority of gamers are 20-40 years old these days.
