DICE: motion controls are a gimmick

Motion controls are a "gimmick" according to DICE, and won't be featured in Battlefield 4.

DICE motion controlsBattlefield 4 won’t feature motion controls, because developer DICE believes they are a gimmick. This comes from DICE’s Patrick Bach, who said that while the studio is “extremely open to innovation”, it has no time for gimmicks. And they believe the new motion controls from Microsoft and Sony are gimmicks — the Kinect and PlayStation Move. Sony recently announced the PS4, which will feature a new PS Eye motion camera.

Bach said DICE is approached all the time and offered money to implement controls. He said to Edge that they are not interested in things that don’t make the game better, adding:

“There are a lot of gimmicks — people throwing money at us — ‘can you implement support for this quirky control thing’. No, it doesn’t make the game better.”

That doesn’t mean DICE won’t support other technologies. For example, Battlefield 4 will support Oculus Rift, the new virtual reality headset. The 3D headset has been shipping to developers for a while now, including the developers at DICE.

The new steroscopic 3D technology has seen support from a wide range of developers, including id Software, Valve, and Epic Games. And of course, the guys at DICE. Although we’ll have to wait how Battlefield 4 will run on the new device.

I would not call motion controls a gimick. They are simply in their infancy, much like VR head mounted displays.

However I agree that BF4 would not benefit from implementing such inputs. At least not until the technology matures further.

Nobody whould think that BF4 whould use motion controls, so why this statement?

It’s like saying “Battlefield 4 won’t use RPG elements and voice recognition, we don’t think those would fit.”

I whould be more happy if they said “We will use ingame voice chat and won’t use Origin, we don’t think that it will enhance the gameplay and overall feeling of Battlefield.” Now THAT whould be a Statement that the community whould care about.

In that case they’re mean” track ir” is also a gimmick? I don’t think that.
Kinect 2 and Sonys new cam could probably have replaced the “track ir” technology.
Search YouTube for “track ir” if you don’t know what it is.

    Well FU Patrick Bach!

I happen to think that DICE are just a gimmick and shall be buying and playing ARMA III this time around (full TrackIR support) and not gimmicky DICE’s gimmicky BF4.
