Battlefield 4 pre-orders “below BF3 at this point”

Exclusive: BF4 pre-orders are doing well, but are still below BF3.

Battlefield 4 vs BF3 pre-ordersBattlefield 4 might be one of the most anticipated games this Fall, but it’s actually doing worse than its predecessor when it comes to total pre-orders, BF4Central has found out.

We spoke to a couple of retail managers from video game shops in California, and to two GameStop managers in Los Angeles regarding Battlefield 4 pre-order numbers.

While all of them said that Battlefield 4 was doing well when it came to pre-orders, they also told us that pre-orders for Battlefield 4 were “below BF3 at this point in time”, as one of the managers put it.

“Pre-order sales are down compared to BF3, and inquiries and interest from costumers appears to be down”, said the GameStop manager from a Los Angeles store who wished to remain anonymous. He added that pre-order sales of Call of Duty Ghosts are “about the same” as they were for last year’s Call of Duty Black Ops 2.

Despite lagging behind BF3, analysts have predicted that Battlefield 4 was the most pre-ordered next-gen game (for the PS4 and Xbox One). Of course, pre-order quantities on the PS4 and Xbox One represent only a fraction of to total Battlefield 4 pre-orders, since the install base of current gen and PC are much, much greater.

Officially, EA hasn’t released pre-order numbers (they rarely do), but EA’s CFO said during a recent conference call with investors that Battlefield 4 pre-orders are “stacking up well against BF3. We’re pretty certain that if Battlefield 4 pre-orders were outselling BF3, EA would have gladly shared the good news with investors.

Either way, Battlefield 4 will likely sell millions and millions of copies, and Premium subscriptions will account for a lot of extra revenue for EA (they sold over 4 million Premium subscriptions for BF3). The company has previously said that they “won’t stop until Battlefield is the number one shooter franchise“.

Battlefield 4 launches in just one week on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. It will also be a launch title for the PS4 and Xbox One in November.

This is the cost of poor optimization and patching on day of release.

Now everyone knows that the game needs a couple of monthes to adjust before you purchase it.

i believe sales figures will be above BF3 eventually (because of next-gen), but not pre-release.

Pretty much this. Not to mention they did not allow anyone with 32-bit systems to test the beta.

Also, the beta was a piece of diarrhea from a dead dog’s ass. Worse than BF3 in every way. No recoil, roof campers, RPG able to lock on to vehicles, lame, boring urban map, the list goes on.

It would be true, but if you remember bf3 was broken on launch day and they didn’t fix it at all (not counting errors and bugs), they didn’t change anything and made game that is not fun to play. I would say that this is the cost they are paying now, of not taking care of last game and just releasing additional maps on top of something that was not good. When it goes to comparison, bf3 gained a lot of user later down the line, also adding a lot of humble bundle people, reasonable person would say that pre-orders for new game should be higher than for version 3, unless most people from last game thought that game wasn’t worth it or that you cannot believe in this company to fix their game after launch.
Basically they dig their own grave with terrible decisions in last game.

        October 25th, 2013 at 2:47 pm

Of course they didn’t fix it, they made it WORSE. Almost every patch introduced some new, often weird bugs, some of which remain unfixed today. They will never get fixed and BF4 will be tossed into the gutter as soon as the last DLC is released anyway.

I think is because the marketing. First they release this stupid BF moments every week. They keep giving costumers more info making the interest of BF to go down. Another reason is the BETA, I understand that a beta has a lot of issues, but some people are ignorant and think that’s a representation of the final product. BF4 beta had a lot of problems something that make the costumers mad and disappointed. in the other hand, COD his competitor doesn’t give to much information and doesn’t give a beta to show how shitty the game really is. I think that BF4 is going to sell more than BF3, but it’s going to take some time.

i agree totally with you …..the beta dragged a few gamers into a world of pain and all jumping to conclusions that there cherished lovingly crafted systems would fail before take off and they would need to splash out on new GPU’s etc, it was a gamble for the dev team and will for a short while have an impact on sales.Rest assured though BF4 will dominate the FPS market all it will take is a few weeks of patches and tweaks and COD will be but a shadow on the wall 🙂

Who gives a rip about console noobs and their pre order numbers. We all know (those of us that have real gaming platforms the PC) that pre orders for PC are way up over BF3 and will grow.

I think BF4 sales are stellar… In this article, author only interviewed TWO managers from Gamestop and TWO managers from “video game shops in California”. Of course BF4 orders are low in those brick and mortar stores; the majority of gamers pre-ordered BF4 through Origin online. The author goes on to admit that EA “hasn’t released the pre-order numbers” so we have no idea how many gamers signed up. Saying “we’re pretty sure that if BF4 was outselling BF3, EA would have gladly shared the news with investors” doesn’t walk on water either b/c who knows what EA is telling investors. I can, however, believe that Ghost sales “are about the same” b/c I’ll mostly kids frequent those shops while they’re shopping with mommy in the mall. That said, thank you Activision for selling a game that keeps those 11 and 12 year old whiny punks out of our BF3/BF4 servers.

Just to compare, I work in the east coast market where our preorder sales currently have BF4>BF3 and BlOps2>Ghosts

you can’t jump to conclusions over 1 towns preorder sales when official numbers haven’t been released

Tell me, what exactly is BF4 bringing to the table this year that BF3 didn’t have. Don’t say commander. I want to know what HUGE ITEM are they bringing to the table this year that will make BF4 much different from ANY OTHER Battlefield game. FB2 was the reason we all fell in love with BF3. But I’m not feeling much love for BF4. Is Levolution really the only thing they have as their main point? How long will that take to wear out on me? A year? A month? A week? It took BF3 a long time to get boring for me and that introduced alot more new stuff to the Battlefield franchise than BF4 is bringing.

      October 24th, 2013 at 3:26 pm

The question is, What COD brings to the table? nothing, and still manage to sell millions of copies, doesn’t make logic. Don’t forget that COD doesn’t really bring nothing to the table. I agree with you, BF4 isn’t that much different than BF3, but it has a lot of details, more destruction, more customization, levolution, commander mode, some new modes, etc. Now consoles are getting 64 players, for me those details make BF4 worth the buy. Another thing you have to realize is that BF3 was very popular, maybe the most popular BF game, DICE wouldn’t change BF4 that much. At least they change somethings. COD releases the EXACT same garbage every year and no body complains about it.

      • WOOT FTW
        October 24th, 2013 at 6:27 pm

So you’re saying that COD releases the EXACT same thing EVERY year. Let’s see what you listed about BF4…

“a lot of details, more destruction, more customization, levolution, commander mode, some new modes, etc”

COD Ghosts will introduce (some what but not near what Battlefield has) “destruction”. And in a way COD Ghosts “destruction” is like Battlefield’s Levolution. Yes Battlefield is always on a much larger scale, but COD is always on a smaller scale, so it depends on what you like to play. So Battlefield’s Levolution and COD “Levolution” is proportional to the map size. It just depends on what you like to play. (For me both).

Both games will have new game modes. That comes standard for ALL new games.

More customization. Once again it depends on the game you like to play. COD is all about YOU. Battlefield is 50% YOU and 50% TEAM. Both games are introducing new customization options for their series.

Commander mode. Yeah that’s a Battlefield thing and will always be a Battlefield thing. But COD has CO OP. Something that Battlefield will not have this year. I liked the CO OP in BF3 but I’m not crying my eyes out this year. Both games have their unique game modes and styles.

I wouldn’t say that COD releases the same EXACT thing every year. To be honest, both games are taking baby steps in their series. And theses baby steps have one thing in common. They came after a MASSIVE REVOLUTIONARY game. I.E. COD 4 and BF3. Is Battlefield starting to go on the COD route? I don’t think so. Many fans of Battlefield are screaming for a BF2143. I haven’t played BF2142 so that will be new to me and I look forward to that. But how many more years of innovative Battlefield games are we going to see? Yes it’s 64 players on next gen, but that’s just what Sony and Microsoft have done. That’s not DICE or EA doing that. The next step in Battlefield is more than 64 players (at least on PC). PC gamers were expecting 120 players this time around, but they didn’t get that. So, will BF2143 with 120 players on FB# be the next BIG step in the series. I hope so.

        WOOT FTW

          October 24th, 2013 at 9:33 pm

You had to wrote all that non sense paragraph. Yes, COD had destruction every FPS now has destruction, but not as BF scale (if you know what I mean) Neither BF or COD have unique modes, the so call on Blitz mode in COD had nothing unique, a soldier that disappear in a portal (HALO). well in that case Why COD getting 12 players in next gen? BF doesn’t give people more than 64 players because its going to make the game unbalance. When BF3 came out to the PS3, the ps3 limit the players in BF, you got no excuse there. Now the engine, don’t tell me that COD engine is better than the frostbite 3, frostbite 3 is the best engine right now, maybe the fox engine can be better. COD what gives new, a dog, a woman character, more killstreaks, what else? Next time bring something legit.

Bf4 beta was better than bf3 in every way imo.
      There was much more teamplay.
Not sure what does the trick but it plays a lot better than bf3.
Yes there still were some issues with the beta but who cares 🙂

after the beta i played bf3 2 times and gave up after 5 minutes.
      And i won’t touch bf3 again lmao.

Tbh it’s already deleted from my sweet hdd.

      • whatever
        October 25th, 2013 at 2:51 pm

More teamplay? Don’t make me laugh. If ‘teamplay’ means a bunch of people camping the roof above the C flag, then yeah, BF4 has a LOT of teamwork.

If ‘teamplay’ means spamming XM25 rounds EVERYWHERE, then BF4 is the BEST teamplay game out there.

If ‘playing better’ means zero recoil and the same crappy hit-detection system as in BF3, then yes, BF4 plays a LOT better.

Note the sarcasm. No, the BF4 beta was a lot worse and it didn’t get me anywhere near as riled up as the BF3 beta did.

when i was playing the beta, i did not get spammed with xm25 rounds, nor did “everyone” camp c flag. if they do you can shoot the damn building down. your acting like the beta is the final product dude chill.

PC sales: more people are simply preordering online, especially through Origin now that it’s been around for a couple more years.

Console sales: BF4 is meant for next gen consoles, not the current, outdated systems. Sales will be fine.. you know, once the new consoles are actually out!

That’s absolutely no surprise, OMG! BF4 is something like BF 3.5, nothing more, nothing less. And I’m happy that ppl aren’t so dumb so they will buy BF4 right after the release. It needs a weeks to patch it out to the playable version on the most computers. So…

There really isn’t a good way to judge this. Just because GameStop sales are down, doesn’t mean that other websites, like Amazon are. For all we know, Amazon could have 80% of the sales. Of course, people also just want to wait a few months to get rid of some bugs, and the next-gen consoles probably play a role in this as well.

Bf4: commander mode, levelution, new engine. Just a big expansion pack. Cod ghost: squad mode, squad v squad, thousands of character customization, juggernaut maniac, destruction, new killstreak that changes the map entirely, dual rendering scopes, DEDICATED SERVERS, no more theatre, cranked, search and rescue, blitz (nice twist on cap the flag), girl character, peak and lean system, shooting while hurdling, slide and bigger step in graphics and hundreds of days of playability. Ghosts has changed more thus year than any cod to date, notice I didnt say anything about new perks new killstreaks or the fact that they still have a nice killcam. Frostbite 3 looks beautiful something I wish cod had but I dont need a lambo gallardo when I have a 69 chevelle 😉

The only reason console pre-orders are down, is because of the confusion about upgrading to the next-gen consoles.
Im still confused and was told to pre-order both the xbox 360 and the xbox1 titles.
doesnt make sense but i did anyways (can always cancel)
If there were no next-gen consoles coming out at the same time, or if bf4 was released a year from now, pre-orders would be through the roof.

I won’t be getting bf4 I have played the rest of the bf and for me it’s the same crap just slightly better graphics, but the main reason is because dice got way to greedy when they started to rent servers now every single time I play bf3 I get kicked because I’m usually top of the leader board so shafts the point in buying a game when some fag that rented a seeder can decide if I play or not because I killed him or took his dog tags, thanks but no thanks dice.

BF4 will sell steadily as time goes by, but DICE could have done more animations for the character models to make it look more like a sequel. To be honest, I don’t see much of a difference from BF3, except a minor bump in graphics and some tweaks to the gameplay by adding some events in MP. That is not a bad thing, but it is a “wait for a price drop” thing.

These devs that make FPS games need to understand that when they are making their 4th or 5th game in a series, they should keep the core gameplay, but make an effort to work on new animations to make the game appear new. Hell, by now I would have expected dismemberment in BF4 which would have greatly enhanced the visceral experience playing the game.
